Allbirds has become a billion dollar valued brand based on wool and sugar, neither material is proprietary, but their launch was timely and allowed for an understated look, that worked well with VCs looking to remain neutral in Silicon Valley. The brand parlayed their sustainability play into one of the most popular brands of the last three years. I’ve written about Allbirds and their being born as 3 over 7 via a Kickstarter. I always bring this up because the company began as a performance running company with a wool upper. There wasn’t anything mentioned about sustainability or quality. The transition from 3 over 7 to Allbirds is a marketing master course. This isn’t about Allbirds though… It’s about CLAE. I’ve stated more than once that the term athleisure or casual athletic was, in my opinion, created by CLAE. They were in the skate performance department and saw an opportunity to build a better casual Friday shoe from their skate aesthetics. They began using the term casual athletic before I saw it being utilized by industry people.
The brand has been making a true effort to build an entire line up of sustainable shoes. They’ve rolled out Vegan based products, recycled plastic sneakers and while I’ve seen pineapple leather before, they are now, “Pursuing our commitment to conscious and sustainable fashion, we have been working tirelessly to develop a 100% organic and sustainable material that is as surprising as it is innovative. In collaboration with DESSERTOⓇ, the 2020 Green Product Award winners and creators of a highly sustainable plant-based vegan leather, we have created the first sneaker made of cactus leather.”
CLAE was one of the first casual athletic options in DTC. They are now making a push to become one of the most sustainable brands on the market. You can join them in their push by Pre-Ordering a pair of the Cactus Leather Bradley colorways. If you’re feeling some kind of way about not wanting to pre-order… remember, 3 over 7 did 100,000 thousand dollars in 5 days on Kickstarter and still had to build and ship the shoes and then changed their entire concept. CLAE has been here, making quality footwear and adjusting to provide the market the casual athletic sneakers they always have, the shoes are just better now.
