Before Killer Mike dropped his latest project, which is being hailed as the potential album of the year in Hip-Hop, Mick Jenkins was writing albums like Elephant in the Room and Pieces of a Man. With a body of work that in my opinion is only outdone by Pharoahe Monch, I place Pharoahe and Mick above Kendrick and Cole, Mick’s discography is filled with incredible lyricism and a depth of soul driven by the history of a people informed by personal analysis and introspection.

Smoke Break is from his upcoming project and features JID. The song recalls Gwendolyn’s Apprehension with a break in the video showing the words of Audre Lord. The song speaks towards a problem in the Black community of learned violence by Black boys. I shouldn’t have to compare Mick to Michael Render, but it’s important to understand how Jenkins is always able to deliver heart and soul in his bars. While Killer Mike’s Michael is a much more high-profile project and amazing, if you liked that album add any project from Mick Jenkins. Thank me later.
