The Colonial vs Houston game on Friday night may have been the game of the entire 2-day event. It went to overtime before Houston won it 56-53. Kolby Shaw was good in that game, showing off his feel for scoring. He knocked the 3 down, showed touch on the floater, and handled the ball on a string under pressure.
Joseph Labonte and Will McCabe both had their moments. McCabe made timely 3 pointers when his team needed him most. On Friday night though, watching them, I could see them probably struggling some with Millington. Not because they weren’t good enough to win but because of their style of play. There is an old adage, styles make fights, and, in their case, they just didn’t match up well with Millington.
I think they can play with just about anyone but for them, they have to be like the Celtics in the NBA. The long ball has to fall. It’s one of their strengths, but as we know, if you aren’t making them, they may have nights where they struggle offensively. I still like their team. They move the ball well enough to get you off balance, but I would love to see them play inside-out with their bigs to kind of balance their offense. I think the balance will comes as the season progresses. Adding the inside game will give them better looks which means more open 3 pointers.
Don’t Sleep on Colonial
Colonial is another team I think will get better. I think Coach Cedric Franklin does as good of a job as anyone getting the best out of his team. I also think Aiden Harris is really good. I heard some say this weekend he is one of a few that can make a claim as the best player pound for pound at this level. I do think that he drifts some in games but he’s talented, I just want to see him attack, attack and attack some more because off the dribble, I don’t think anyone can stay in front of him. He’s big and strong enough to take you with him and make the and 1 free throw after scoring.
Colonial will need more from Marcus Bond as well. He will be big for them because everyone they play will just try and figure out a way to take Harris out of the game. Others will need to step up and be contributors especially helping to handle the ball and making shots. Bond has to be their second guy, every game and in some instances. He could outscore Harris because I think he will get more opportunities in some games due to the attention on Harris.
