The Spirit of Phife envelops what appears to be the final release from one of the greatest groups in music history. When I got this album a month ago, I hadn’t listened to it and then the Dave Chappelle episode on SNL happened and I heard We The People. When Tip, Robi and Ali stopped and moved, the banner of Phife dropped and I jumped up and grabbed my CD, went to the computer slapped my headphones on and listened… well I didn’t do it so immediately because I was caught watching Chappelle, but when I started listening I realized that this album was important.
It’s amazing how the statement, “and a child shall lead them,” resonated throughout the last two years of Hip-Hop. While mumble rap has dominated the mainstream it hasn’t had any of the success of Kendrick Lamar and now the series of albums that have dropped since To Pimp A Butterfly has seen classic emcees grab the mic and deliver life changing content.
