When Derrick Rose was getting injured people talked about his sneakers. The same thing is happening with Anthony Davis and people saying that low-cut sneakers are bad are for you. I wanted to discuss the reality of the injuries we see in professional sports. The reality is that the NCAA rule changes led to a diminished window to recruit high school players. This has led to the professionalization of youth sports and kids playing one sport year-round. When you add in the fact that these players are not receiving instruction on proper techniques and aren’t being allowed to recover, you find a situation leading to a lot of issues at the pro level. Anthony Davis, however, is not being injured only because of overuse, his problem derives from his growth spurt and weight gain, compounded by the fact that he was athletic as a small guard and maintained his athleticism as a big. He plays a leaning lateral game and does so in crowded areas where he is more likely to land on another player’s legs in traffic. His injuries are a matter of location on the court, overuse and repetition.
