adidas delivers an early sneaker of the year candidate. A few years ago Nike rolled a series of sneakers named N.354. The sneakers paid homage to the brand’s rich catalog of sneakers. One of those shoes was the Squash Type. That shoe didn’t sell well at all and ended up on discount at the Factory Store for 19.99. The reason was simple. The construction was poor and the sneakers in the series lacked the combination of color and story. adidas is taking a page from their own design heritage and collaborating with London based designer Craig Green.
The CG SQUASH POLTA AKH has subtle branding details beneath transparent overlays, but the details you might overlook like the Trefoil on the gum rubber bumper on the lateral front of the sneaker, or the shoestrings made to form Three Stripes blend perfectly with a rough suede. A few years ago Nike rolled out a bevy of the Killshot sneakers and while sneakerheads didn’t take a look at the model, it was easily one of the best selling sneakers for Nike and in resale. The Killshot was an under 100 dollar, simple shoe that was similar to this model only in the basic design. adidas and Craig Green elevated that look into a shoe that can be recreated in several colors.
The shoe won’t find a lot of admirers in the U.S., but in the U.K. where adidas has a nice foothold, it will undoubtedly be coveted. Right now, for me, it will definitely make my list of top sneakers. It’s just the right amount of understated design blended with the type of details that will look fantastic with denim or chinos in the fall. The CG SQUASH POLTA AKH will drop on July 27 in the colourway cream white/sesame/bold green, available through the adidas CONFIRMED app and select retailers.
