Living in the U.S. we have a tendency to make things all about the U.S. In doing so we forget that many brands have a truly international heritage which resonates in certain countries in a stronger way than the dominance of Nike here in the States. In the UK the sneaker culture doesn’t revolve solely around Nike. Trainers/sneakers tend to represent a diverse spectrum and adidas does an incredible job of delivering collections that cater to the style of the country.

A few of my favorite pieces in this spring/summer collection consists of almost all of the items. I tend to wear a lot of Nike, but Nike is ever present in my city meaning I have access to a ton of inexpensive merchandise. This leaves me rocking Nike from head to toe and even when I’m wearing a pair of NMDs, Stan Smiths or Deerupts I have Nike on at the top (which in my day was a major fashion faux pas. The apparel selections for addias in this region consists of tee shirts primarily. This speaks to an ongoing issue with the presentation of apparel in the U.S. Here in sneaker stores clothing tends to be too young or too simple. You either get Grindhouse or tees and sweatshirts. Items in this collection won’t be found in certain regions in the U.S. because it simply wouldn’t sell.
In this collection are tees, but they are offset with lightweight jackets and pants as opposed to grey sweatshirts. The imagery in the video and music aren’t as effective as they could be, but the apparel is definitely clean and is wearable by any age group and that’s important. adidas has an ability to cover large segments with their footwear and apparel and that’s an advantage that isn’t capitalized upon because of an ongoing issue I have with footwear and apparel stores lacking true sales strategies and merchandising. I won’t dive into that, but there is truly an opportunity available for a launch of boutique shops that cater to 30-40 something sneaker enthusiasts who have the money and want to be sold and educated on what they are wearing.
