A few years ago I wrote this:
The discussion was purely hypothetical and KITH doesn’t need to really “go public” or pursue an IPO. The brand/store could easily create more retail outlets and disrupt the entire streetwear and fashion industry in the same manner that an IPO would allow it to do, without being owned by shareholders.
For the last few years KITH’s NYFW has been one of the dopest rollouts of design for any private label in the country. This year wasn’t any different. Under the tag KITH PARK Ronnie Fieg and Eugene Tong styled a show that also featured a limited release collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger and a sneaker release that was covered by a number of online media companies.

The influence and reach of Fieg’s world has yet to crossover into the mainstream and quite possibly it never will. So the question becomes how can he and KITH be a real disruption? Fashion is an unpredictable wave. Actually, it’s predictable because the fashion houses make an effort to control the narrative and push the design elements they’ve created into the public’s mind and pocket. The delivery of images from NYFW doesn’t resonate everywhere because it isn’t meant too. Fieg only has 5 brick and mortar locations for KITH in three cities: Los Angeles, NYC and Miami. The intent is clearly to dominate in trendsetting locations without regard to the rest of the country. A person in Houston, Texas isn’t going to wear what a person in New York or Miami is wearing because there aren’t shared interests… or are there?
The women’s apparel curated by KITH is a collection of fashion driven style, with unisex appeal. The apparel is dope and attracts a man’s eye, but styles women in empowering streetwear while remaining elegant. Looking through the pictures and browsing the brands curated by KITH Women tells me that if the label decided to make a push into more markets, the stores would thrive. More important here is that KITH has taken the time to deliver multiple brands for women and to describe each one in great detail on their site. In doing so the brands are given a platform that reaches a million a month. This lifts his own private label, KITH Women, by association. KITH is a model for retail and this curated collection is dope.
