The team at Brandblack may be the most productive company in footwear, but their release pattern leaves a lot to be desired. The Tarantula running shoe from the brand dropped less than a month ago and the roll out of all of their footwear didn’t really get a lot of lead time for fans to follow and understand the reason or the why around the product.
I don’t typically like that a company doesn’t focus on marketing, especially when there is another running shoe entry by Brandblack, that arrived without fanfare or an introduction. I may not like their approach to releasing footwear, a peer of mine said the same thing, but Brandblack is a throwback to the time when we walked in sneaker stores just to browse and would be blown away by what we discovered on the shelves.
Is it possible to be a brand, that isn’t mainstream, with this type of delivery of new product? Yes and no. I’m on the e-mail list, so I get notified of new releases now. Brandblack has become my latest fascination. Like all brands I discover and become interested in, I research and learn as much as possible. I’m not the average consumer though. The average consumer is consumed by social media and they constantly flick through content.
If there isn’t an announcement or a notification through an app, the consumer doesn’t even think about the brand. On the sneaker culture side of the business, if the shoes don’t appear on a mainstream site like Hypebeast or Solecollector, the brand can end up out of site, out of mind. This means that a focus on product and design is hindered by a lack of content and marketing.
But, this focus on research and design can also allow for a company to dial-in on what matters most, the product. When a customer discovers Brandblack they can’t help but notice the technical aspects of the shoe and the beauty of the design. To be honest, Brandblack is creating some of the best looking footwear in the business. the SSC is based on a lifestyle option from the company, The Specter. The company took the bones of that original model and tweaked it for performance. The outcome is this new trainer.
