Ewing Athletics, founded by legendary New York Knicks center Patrick Ewing, is heating up the summer with the release of a classic HipHop inspired sneaker. The vintage sneaker company just released the ROGUE in collaboration with the Ultramagnetic MCs—one of the most innovative and lyrical rap groups from Bronx, New York City founded by Kool Keith in the ‘80s.

“The ROGUE is one of our most popular sneakers from Ewing Athletics, and we’re excited to launch this sneaker by popular demand in collaboration with Ultramagnetic MCs,” said David Goldberg, Head of Ewing Athletics. This special sneaker design is based on the Ultramagnetic MCs “Critical Beatdown” album cover. Released in 1988, the album cover features a UM monogram leather upper along with Ultramagnetic branding and a special album cover collector’s box. “Critical Beatdown” is regarded as a classic album from HipHop’s Golden Age that helped usher in a more modern style of production and rhyme styles.

Known for their rugged and unorthodox sampling and lyrics, and Kool Keith’s abstract rhymes and off-beat delivery, Ultramagnetic MCs have influenced many rappers, including Pharoahe Monch from Organized Konfusion and Ghostface Killah of Wu-Tang Clan, and even Chuck D of Public Enemy. “It’s important to pay homage to the pioneers who don’t get the recognition and flowers they deserve,” Goldberg said. “This unique collaboration shows appreciation for the culture and recognizes the artists and talent that paved the way.”
