Predictions
Under Armour distributes so few shoes through Foot Locker and its derivatives that it’s hard to make a prediction. In the past when I ran my Amazon store I had access to an abundance of Under Armour shoes so I had a better grasp on how the brand was performing. This past year Nike has dominated my online sales so much that the only prediction I can make about a brand is based on how well their footwear performs in the third party. Since UA doesn’t have any value at all in third party (they do but it is very limited and none of their GRs are worth attempting to sell in the third party marketplace) and they have kept such a tight rein on HOVR and Curry it’s difficult to do any analysis.
I do know that in the third party the Curry 5 (where it’s available) is performing well, but there aren’t many available for resell. HOVR isn’t available at all in third party and of the 30 plus stores in the Memphis area I’ve only seen the HOVR in one location (that shoe was an online return).
As far as footwear is concerned the brand appears to have a grasp on its inventory and this should bode well as they aren’t facing an issue there, but if wholesale is factored in there has to be a lag. There aren’t many accounts carrying UA. City Gear took a chance on the Curry 4, but the shoe eventually hit the clearance store and dropped as low as 39.99 which basically means that people in Memphis aren’t checking for Steph’s kicks; hence the lack of local stores carrying the brand. Finish Line Wolfchase does carry the Curry 4 and Drive 4, but I never bought any because none of the shoes were requested by my clients. I would typically take this as a bad thing for the brand, but not with UA right now. I know that they are making a strong push towards DTC because of the failure of retail outlets to adhere to MSRP on their products.
As far as broken sizes on the site the UA HOVR Phantom has few sold out sizes. The Heather version (City Khaki) is sold out. The UA HOVR Sonic in Pierce (red) is sold out but the other four colorways have very few broken sizes. The Project Rock Delta I’m certain was a very limited release, but there is reason for excitement there as Under Armour is staying true to their performance roots and seeing some success.
This conference call will be extremely important for UA as they have momentum and they are building trust in the stock market. I predicted they would hit the mid to high 20s by Q4. This is purely a guess because I simply don’t have access to the footwear and most of my predictions are based on resale and the brand simply doesn’t exist there for me anymore.
I’ll be tuned in to listen for sure.
