One of the most frustrating things in the world for a sneaker shopper is walking into a crowded store and waiting on a sales lead to come over and check on the availability of a shoe, only to find the shoe isn’t in inventory. It’s equally as frustrating when you walk in a store and find only two employees and one is in the back of house looking for shoes, or breaking down boxes and the other has to man the front of house or the register. In a recent article I discussed Nike’s move towards an Apple Store styled checkout system utilizing handheld devices to both check out customers and to check inventory. Those handheld devices are a part of a larger system for retail that also features installed Wall scanners with inventory information.

I recently took a couple of days to visit the new Jimmy Jazz locations in Mississippi. At two of the stores they had updated the walls and their barcode systems for labeling footwear. The outcome is a grocery styled scanner that not only gives you the price of the shoe, but via an X, or a blue/green check tells you immediately if a particular model is in inventory. To put it plainly you can grab any shoe off of the shelf, take it over to the wall and check to see if your size is in stock. It’s an excellent addition to the store and diminishes man hours by stores and improves loss prevention. One of the primary ways that boosters and shoplifters hit stores is by walking in with a group and tying up all of the employees by asking for shoes. This scanner system will help to offset days where only one employee is on the floor and it will improve the customer experience.

The store I was able to use the system was Jimmy Jazz Batesville and the staff actually showed me how to read the display. The experience was dope. The walls are being fitted in the Clarksdale location as well. The store also had handheld scanners and a new e-mail request by sales leads at the checkout.

P.S. BTW I bought 6 pair from the Batesville location, I bought shoes at the other stores as well, but it took more time. Fortunately for me, unfortunately for Jimmy Jazz, the stores weren’t very busy… Which is another story altogether. You can take my money when the experience is smooth.

Nice system Jimmy Jazz.

Oh, an added benefit of this type of system? Employees can’t hide shoes for friends which is a problem that leads to a number of issues with customer retention; which is another conversation as well.
