Jobs of Interest Now available (JOIN) is a joint program to educate sneaker culture, students and employees in the marketplace, of the vast opportunities with footwear and apparel brands beyond design. Those who love kicks see very limited opportunities in the industry. They think there are only resale hustles of flipping kicks and design of sneakers as jobs. A look at the educational opportunities and it makes sense. What is often presented are programs at various institutions which allow you to learn the process of sneaker creation, but not everyone is a creative.
Thus far JoIN has highlighted brands. We’ve done outreach to non-traditional jobs in the sneaker industry for interviews, but those have been difficult to get approved via individuals who don’t want to be profiled in discussions on sneaker industry jobs. I’ve decided against creating JoIN posts for those companies. If an employee is afraid to speak on the record about their job, there is an inherent problem in that company. Dick’s is one of the most transparent companies in sneaker retail. They have one of the most comprehensive presentations of information on their internal strategies for the sportswear retailer. The information is almost overwhelming, so I chose to deliver a few job listings while also providing the detailed pages for information on inclusion and infographs on accomplishments and goals.

In listing jobs for DSG it’s important to note that this is a company that hasn’t been reliant on the dominance of Nike to make the grade. I’ve always listed DSG as the model for any retailer looking to diversify their brand offerings successfully. In the past I discussed an internal GPS for a company like Foot Locker that was connected to the growth of Nike. That GPS became broken as Nike ramped up their own Direct business. Dick’s is a company wisely operating in reverse. New brands connected to DSG have seen better sales years and growth than retailer’s dependent on the Swoosh. The success of Brooks, Hoka and On Running is rooted in DSGs focus on all categories of sport vs just apparel and footwear.

When brands began increasing their direct-to-consumer strategies one of the first things I began documenting was the need for private label strategies. Dick’s has rolled out a bevy of brands with entertainers and influencers. They’ve also given each major brand they carry store within store visual merchandising sections allowing for a non-competitive atmosphere. The blend of private labels insulates the company from any brand making a decision to change allotments which could impact DSG. It’s a fantastic business decision providing a layer of security which is seen in the company’s recent growth in a challenging retail environment.

Consider this, DSG made the bold statement of removing guns after all of the mass shootings. While the company has a heavy presence in states associated with gun associations, the move didn’t hurt the company. It bolstered the brand. Making uncomfortable and difficult decisions differentiates DSG from any other sportswear retailer in the market. As big box stores like Macy’s enter another round of closures. Dick’s soared although the stores have a massive footprint. Dick’s is a chain worth highlighting and I hope this information helps if you’d like to JoIN DSG. Use the links within this post.
