I wanted to do something different for this New Music Monday, so this week I’m covering Anderson.Paak’s new song JEWELZ. I’m going to follow the same formula as my other New Music Mondays posts, except with a few differences.
The song and video is interesting. It’s partially a marketing tool for Vans. Since this is a sneaker site that’s important to note. AP has a collab coming out with the company consisting of bucket hats and Old Skool DX shoes. The collab is one of the more authentic collections from a sneaker company, as Paak is a true Cali native and his albums have reflected his loyalty to his home. The collection is based on his Malibu and Venice albums. The music for JEWELZ features an animated Paak and his son.
Vince Score – The Vince score consists of scoring based on the topics below.
Total points attainable: (100 pts)
- What’s the genre – Hip Hop
- Is arrangement interesting? – Yes, the arrangement is pretty interesting. There aren’t any crazy changes or anything but it’s funky. (20/25)
- Is the lyrical content compelling? – Lyrical content is pretty good, it’s not terribly complicated but isn’t particularly ignorant either, that said it is a little hard to tell because of the pitch shift, which I’ll talk about in the next section. (17/25)
- Vocal performance? – Vocal performance is hard to judge seeing as his voice is pitch shifted for the entire song, that said it gives a very interesting effect, and even with the pitch shift, you can still tell it’s Anderson Paak. (18/25)
- Musicality? – Musicality is of course apparent. The song has dynamics and flows naturally, making it easy to listen to and enjoy. (20/25)
- Bonus – Would I add it to my playlist? I already have.
