1994 was the summer that Hip-Hop transitioned into the mainstream, but still held an edge that was both hardcore and lyrical. Nas dropped Illmatic, OutKast arrived from the South and The Chronic was spinning and playing out of every car in San Diego. I was introduced to 5% methodology (although never knowledged 120), Brand Nubians was a part of my studies, but I also discovered Miles Davis and John Coltrane. So when I ran across Digable Planets who captured the jazz and the Hip-Hop while also dropping science from the lessons I was ready to build. One of the songs from Digable Planets was Cool Like That. The irony in the song was that it crossed over although people really had no idea that Digable Planets was probably the most revolutionary group since Public Enemy. This rendition of “Cool Like That” was too good not to share. The group performing is New York based Naturally 7. You can pick up their music here… this is acapella, amazing.
