The Gel Mai resurfaced last year. The response hasn’t been very warm, at least in my city, but I think in this trend of dad shoes, the model offers a less obnoxious alternative and captures a few elements that I think are dope. ASICS has brought a new model out in the RB and I have to admit that this version feels more like the 90s as you can feel that bold, colorful element in a more playful split package.
Using what is labeled as a Kimono tongue and an assymetrical lacing system the shoe’s colorblocking definitely brings to mind the layered look of a traditional Kimono especially in this top down view. There are moments when I see the T-Mac and Tai Chi in the design of the shoe which is really attractive in my opinion. For the older crowd this model probably won’t go over well, but with the right apparel this model should certainly capture the attention of the more fashion forward. The model was dropped in three colors, but the only standout is this Cream/Classic Red.
