A few weeks ago I did an unrolling and framing of my print from Adam Port. The views haven’t been crazy and it showed me that my appreciation for art and sneaker culture is a bit different than most people. This probably stems from my long time desire to open an art gallery built on sports, hip-hop and sneakers. I started reaching out to artists in 2013 to work on getting giclĂ©es, prints and as much original art as I could get. I also did a photography week with my daughter that produced the canvas prints in my office. I admire the skill of Adam and I support his work whenever I see it because as digital art becomes more prominent, people confuse the skill it takes to create a 1 of 1 picture like the Obsidian 1 in the picture above, with the ability for a person to digitally manipulate art. I’m not trying to diminish and lift one over the other, but there is a difference in buying a print for 50 bucks and supporting an artist like Adam.

As an example of the cost associated with art. A quick look at the project I did with my daughter will help. Sneaker enthusiasts will see a signed print and fail to realize the value. My daughter took a series of photos last year. It took a week for us to finish the session. It took another 3 weeks to get the prints on canvas. The cost of those prints for my photography session with my daughter was 170/canvas. Factor in the time it took for us to complete the series and at 11 years old she’s not a professional, but each photo took an average of 30 photographs taken in 95 degree heat and humidity. At the worse a 2 times mark up on the canvas prints would 340.00 a canvas. Factor in shipping and my daughter’s work should sell at the minimum 400.00 dollars a print.

The work that Adam is doing is freaking amazing. The work he has done throughout his career has garnered him the opportunity to work with brands and athletes. His accolades are plenty and to be honest his love of sneaker culture and the creation of his series “Art of the Sole” is being noticed by art galleries and those who value art, but it’s missing the target at the culture level. This series and work should be higher profile on major sneaker sites, but it isn’t and that has more to do with the gatekeepers of “cool”, and that’s another story altogether. Take a minute to follow Adam and you can buy prints of his work:
