What to Expect?
It’s been increasingly difficult to measure UA’s momentum as most of my research derives from store visits and third party sales. In my region Under Armour has one wholesale outlet store and only Finish Line carries the brand and only in small quantities with a limited selection. There isn’t any resale value in the footwear. It’s a far cry from my 2016 post examining if the Curry 3 was as poorly received as the analysts were stating:
The post above delivered an interesting set of data that told a completely different story in resale for Under Armour, but that was 3 shoes ago for UA and since this time my access to the product has become minimal. This means that any predictions I make would be flawed and without a baseline. I can only look at the market and make assumptions and I won’t do that. What I can write is that UA is small enough to adapt a strategy I’ve been touting for almost every brand. I’m writing a post today on a product that I think would translate well to a boutique concept for UA.
If I had to make a guess I would say that UA has continued to see growth in the international market. The brand’s focus on China is smart especially considering the love of basketball in the region and an openness to try brands based on the talent associated with the brands. Stephen Curry remains one of the best partners in footwear endorsements. The addition of personalities like Joel Embiid gives the brand considerable momentum in basketball. It doesn’t resonate at home and the brand has yet to find the cool factor, but they have the tools needed to grab a bigger share at home. The Rock is an additional factor. The conference call should be a good one.
