Portugal based footwear company We Are Underdogs arrived in the U.S. as a partner with PENSOLE during the first World Championship of Design contest sponsored by FootLocker. The team in Portugal can take a sketch and move it from conception and idea to a real product constructed with premium materials.
As the WAU Manufacturing team witnessed designers moving on to different brands, they realized there was an opportunity with the students who didn’t win the top prize in the contest, or weren’t picked up by one of the big brands. The founder Paulo Goncalves launched WAU to give the designers who had created incredible works of art an opportunity to build a brand inside of the brand.
WAU was born to launch premium constructed original footwear from designers giving them an opportunity to have their own signature footwear. Each shoe is launched via pre-order and then made available to the public.
This model was created by Hawaiian designer Isamu Jarman. The SW-02 has hints of classic retro design and is constructed premium, butter soft leather and suede. The neoprene sock and elastic strap at the heel covered in suede and laser branded with IJ allows for ease of entrance and the footbed is a sample layer of foam with leather sitting on top and the WAU x PENSOLE tag with Isamu’s name.
The shoe feels like a cupsole and after wearing it for a week I have to admit that the model doesn’t require a break-in period at all. While the model is constructed well, it does lack a lockdown fit which allows your foot to shift in the shoe a bit, but what I like is that the size 13 is roomy which tells me that guys with wider feet could rock them with no problem at all. It’s a solid drop and definitely inspires consideration to purchase other pairs. It takes about 1-2 weeks for the shipment to arrive after ordering.
