In the turbulent times of 2020, everyone seems to be looking for a way to protest or speak out; whether it be for equality, representation or justice. While I don’t mean for Women’s World Wednesdays to be political or some self-proclaimed crusade of social justice, I thought it was important to shine a light on women in music. It’s of course easy to talk about the big stars such as Beyonce or Rihanna, but for this series I want to focus on lesser known artists.
This Women’s World spotlight shines on Syreeta (Syreeta Wright).
I’m treating this post a little different than normal. Usually I write about new, lesser known artists. I wanted to slightly change topics today. Syreeta was an incredible artist that lived from August 1946 – July 2004. Most of her music has a classic R&B sound. Much of which stems from her being married to Stevie Wonder and the two collaborating on many songs. I highly recommend checking out her music as she is very underrated as an artist. I discovered her from the song “Black Maybe”, in turn I found that it was sampled in Common’s song of the same name. After a bit of research I’ve found that her music has been sampled several times by artists such as Wu Tang Clan, Wiz Khalifa and Jay Rock. She may no longer be with us, but her influence still lives on.
