Running is hard. No one ever explains why. People drop “couch to 5K” posts and tell you to get started. It’s not that straightforward. Running is difficult because of our sedentary lifestyle. Most work is performed at desks, so we don’t spend a lot of time walking. We never spend any time jogging, so it stands to reason that running is hard, but this still doesn’t explain why. When I first became a coach, I was required to get certified by the NFHSC (National Federation of High School Coaches). During the training we had to understand anaerobic and aerobic, along with other important aspects of training high school aged athletes. During that process we learned about dynamic vs static stretching as well. All of the topics covered allowed a better understanding of how to get the most out of student athletes. All of those physical lessons never added up to the most important lesson: every athlete is different.

I learned then that the body goes through different phases throughout life and that the metabolism and agility isn’t the same for every body. There was one training constant however which allowed every athlete to build up to a point where they could run, strength training. Body weight exercises done consistently can lead to better running mechanics. What is always missing from “couch to 5K” is the most critical 4 week training process, body weight drills in sets of three. If an athlete is looking to improve their running ability, doing these exercises will help: Squats, deep squats, toe raises, sit-ups and push-ups. What does all of this have to do with running and jump ropes?

Building strength increases coordination and makes running easier. When you aren’t a small person, however, running can still prove to be difficult and can lead to injury faster than any other exercise. Running is also aerobic primarily meaning it will take longer for an athlete to see the benefit from jogging. Jump Rope can be both anaerobic and aerobic and unlike running, you will see the benefits much faster and in smaller intervals. In a recent dialogue with the CEO of Birkenstock, David Kahan, he stated that Crossrope was his rope of choice, so I decided to visit the site. On my recent top ten list, I placed Hyperrope as a gift option. After listening to David, I wanted to provide an option for those who are deciding to give jump rope a try. I discussed the importance of strength training because there is a misconception about jump rope as a kid’s game. The reality is a variety of rope styles can provide all of the benefits of jogging for 30 minutes in 3 minutes a day. Jump rope when combined with body weight exercises can completely alter the shape of your body in a fraction of the time that jogging and running does. It’s an amazing exercise and with the right equipment it can elevate your fitness and body sculpting.
