I often write a post for the sake of posterity. This post is a bit of information gathering and an analysis of adidas’ finally introducing another cushioning system. One of my long-standing complaints about the Three Stripes has been their inability to grab the thoughts of athletes because they lack a variety of technical advancements that can be described. For a period from 2014 to 2017 adidas had Boost as an advancement, but they rode that tech to a point where their flagship model is on promotional discount almost as soon as it hits stores. UltraBoost doesn’t excite the running community and it does very little for the sneaker community unless it is connected to a limited release collaborative effort. When Lightstrike arrived for adidas, it was rolled out in a dying segment in basketball.

Nike retook the lead from adidas with a combination of lifestyle technology advancements and running advancements. adidas has finally come to life with the Repetitor and Repetitor+ cushioning systems in their latest running the Adistar:

The adidas Adistar key features:

  • Dual Density Midsole: Soft and comfortable REPITITOR foam combines with REPITITOR+ – a firm, second density foam, made of 15% recycled materials – to strike soft whilst still cradling and stabilizing the heel with every stride.
  • Support Cage Fit System: A fully integrated internal support cage designed to wrap and hug the foot when tying the laces to ensure lockdown and extra support.
  • Forefoot Rocker:  Curve shaped angled across the forefront to create a smooth consistent rocking motion that helps you onto the next step. KM after KM.
  • Tailored Last: A dual-gender last informed by both male and female insights to adjust to the anatomical differences of the male and female foot.

This new running shoe sits at the heart of smart pricing and solid tech. At 130, it is one of the least expensive rocker designed running shoes on the market. Where they have failed to capitalize on storytelling is in the marketing of the footwear. Long and slow is an introductory running concept that should be highlighted considerably heading into the new year. With an unseasonably warm winter, and a return to Covid spreading at high rate, people will once again return to the streets and trails to find a reprieve from the stress of restrictions and policies around Covid and the multiple variants. I typically write these posts for posterity, but I’m writing this one as a placeholder. As I get closer to 200 miles on my Zen Running Club shoe, I’ll look for a replacement and the rocker design has become a favorite for me although I’m a heavier runner. adidas should be finding a way to market to us big boys and girls with this one.
