While The Mayor and 23Penny are both famous and infamous in the sneaker world I’ve gone pretty much unnoticed except for the one time I ended up on a small segment of NPR Morning Edition which paved the way for this longer more in depth video.

Here is my little bit of shine:

The Resale Market For Sneakers Is Red Hot | Marketplace Morning Edition

This video is definitely worth your time. This video also speaks to an ongoing conversation I’ve been having about the shifting demographics of sneaker culture. The Mayor explains that at 45 years old he is still an influencer in a culture that people see as a teenage obsession. Sneaker Culture at the high end of resale may be dominated by young people, but overall the culture is definitely a lot more mature than marketing and sneaker executives understand.

The Shifting Demographics of “Sneakerhead” Culture

Check out this video below for some insight into the culture of reselling and influencer marketing.

Full disclosure: I personally think this is really just a sensational look into reselling. The journalism here is almost clickbait at best. This segment failed to dig in to the vast amount of venture capital funds entering the resell market. It’s also failing to analyze the multimillion dollar deals made for ownership of media companies built on sneaker culture and lifestyle. There is an opportunity for a more in-depth look at this topic for someone willing to put in the work.
