The Air Pegasus isn’t typically a shoe that draws the attention of sneaker media or people looking for a “hot” shoe. An all black shoe isn’t typically thought of as breaking the mold.
So why am I taking the time to write about an all Black Air Pegasus? This pair is being released in a way that shows how Nike is responding to the adidas Originals marketing strategies utilized by Bodega and adidas.
Nike is flexing its creative muscles by doing what adidas Originals has been doing on a variety of levels in the last year. This Commes de Garcon inspired Air Pegasus, “celebrates the May 4 opening of “Rei Kawakubo/COMME des GARÇONS: Art of the In-Between” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It has a triple-black suede upper with a leather swoosh and heeltab and features a gold welded CDG logo on the foxing.”
The shoe will be dropped in the Museum’s Art Store.
The Rei Kawakubo exhibition utilizes art based on Zen koans, unsolvable riddles given by Buddhist teachers to their students. It’s art as marketing via lifestyle integration. That’s just a fancy way of saying Nike is not only appealing to the style conscious, but they are utilizing lifestyle as a means of building audience. What do you think?
