“With 50 per cent of girls experiencing discomfort from disposable menstrual products like pads and tampons when participating in sport or physical exercise, we felt it was important to design a range of leak-proof activewear that would make playing sport on your period more comfortable, more protected, and more possible than ever,” says Erin Longin, Global Director Running and Training business unit at PUMA.

Any time I can share information about girls in sport, I will. As the father of a track and field athlete entering high school, I know how tough it is for my daughter to practice through the first few days of her period. When she isn’t training with her team and we are working out, I’m very conscious of how she approaches training during her time of the month. Because guys don’t understand the uncomfortable aspects of wearing pads or tampons while doing squats or simply running, we may find ourselves thinking that a girl athlete is not working as hard as she can. The reality is leaks can happen and pads don’t stay in place all of the time. Fathers need to have open dialogue with their daughters to let them know there isn’t anything shameful about natural body functions and we also need to be aware that sometimes you can’t just play through it… especially when our daughters are young.
