Talk about not knowing what’s inside of a restaurant… I just hit the website for Sabor and saw the video on the homepage. I had no idea that back of the restaurant held an outdoor patio and an extra seating area. When the crew visited, we commented on the entrance being Miami-like and we discussed how it felt like we were no longer in Memphis. We didn’t browse and look around Sabor, but now that I’ve seen the video, I’m really recommending this spot as a destination visit. What’s a destination visit? It’s a place where you aren’t going to really run across without visiting on purpose. For those who live in the Medical District of Memphis they can definitely walk there, but there aren’t really any other places around Sabor to deliver the type of foot traffic restaurants need to sustain in a blue-collar city. That doesn’t mean it’s not worth it.
The few pics you see in this post are because the food looked so good, we began eating it before I could snap pictures. Two of the people in the crew got Arepas, but the wifey and I chose to be experimental. We chose the Mix-Grill/Parilla Picada. We didn’t know what the yucca would look like, but when it came out like fries it felt familiar, but the taste was distinctly different especially when paired with the various portions of beef, chicken and pork sausage, which could be layered onto quarter sections of arepas allowing us to create our own versions of a sandwich styled meal. The unexpected large, sliced tomatoes and avocado was the perfect blend of fresh ingredients and flavor. The price wasn’t bad at all, and the serving sizes were perfect. In the Arepa picture below, what looks like grilled bread is actually grilled white cheese.
I’m assuming that as the day turns to dusk and its date night the atmosphere improves even more. The menu isn’t long and that’s a good thing. It means Sabor knows what it cooks the best and they focus on doing that consistently and with care and speed. We will definitely be going back to try the arepas ourselves and the Venezuelan Travel which includes an arepa, empanada, patacon and cachapa.
