At the start of the year, I wrote a post stating Saucony seemed to be standing in quicksand. I proposed the brand’s chase after youth culture and hype had broken the team at Wolverine. The website and social media wasn’t being updated and the array of amazing drops that garnered the brand sneaker of the year on this site in 2017, and several spots in 2018, was left behind to focus on running and performance:

Did Saucony’s Foray into the Misleading World of Hype & Sneakerheads Break the Brand?

I eventually discovered that WWW was going through a round of layoffs and reorganization from 2019 to 2020. They were also working on an Originals release that would be the most sustainable sneaker released in 2021. The company seems to have refrained from placing an emphasis on influencers, but leaned heavily on smarter releases relying on the heritage of the brand. I can’t speak for the results, but I bought a pair of the RFG Courts and I’ve been adding releases to lists the last couple of months. While resale shouldn’t be the gauge for success, Saucony is awake and today they dropped one of the only shoes to sell through in the same way that a Nike drop would have.

The “Food Fight” is a classic “What the” moment for Saucony. The infamous combination of drops that Nike tends to release each year on their more popular models, remains an almost guaranteed sell through for the Swoosh. Other brands haven’t attempted this strategy as often. It’s difficult as many brands fail to build a narrative around their releases. When they do, the result doesn’t seem to resonate as much. Saucony has always delivered incredible limited drops and their food themed shoes fetch resale prices still. The team behind these shoes uses a tried and true method. They align with a retailer, choose a theme that is central to the region for the account and they build a shoe with premium materials that always rings up at less than 150 in most instances.

The result has been amazing. The Belgian Waffle, Oktoberfest, The Ramen (which ranked in my list of best sneakers dropped), are a couple of the models found in the “Food Fight”. The shoe has already hit resale on StockX and eBay. As of 9:22 am the day of release, there haven’t been many sold in resale (25 total so far, with eBay leading the average price sold 266 to 225), but the prices are exorbitant! While there isn’t a number of shoes made available, this is still a successful drop from Saucony. Want to know an interesting bit of information? The Food Fight concept could easily be carried over to their roster of themed kicks from their vaults. Consider that this shoe didn’t even include the Chocolate Pack! Now consider that the Bricks, Afew, Space and Orignators is waiting in the wings… Could you guess all of the flavors in the Food Fight? If not, here is a video to help:
