blankFinished WestWorld last night and to be honest the 10 series-first season was very hard to push through on occasion. The pacing of the show is terrible. During viewings I often found myself dozing off at critical times causing me to rewind and watch again to make sure I wasn’t overlooking an important detail. The hour and a half finale was crafted better than any of the previous 9 episodes and retained my attention so well that I actually sat through the credits.

If you exited your DVR at the end of the episode, you missed critical information in preparation for the next season. It’s not very long, but you have to stay with it.WestWorld seems to be a discussion on man’s search for self and man’s conflict with being created. I want to dig into this in greater detail by explaining what I mean here, but I don’t want to play spoiler. Although the series is very slow it is worth the investment because the questions that arise can actually cause you to question your own perception of “life” and what contributes to how we interact with those things deemed real and fake. WestWorld is also inviting you to ask the question, “Now that man has created the Large Hadron Collider, what is the next step?”

It is much too simple for me to look at the series which stars a brilliant Anthony Hopkins (Ford), Jeffrey Wright (Bernard) and Thandie Newton (Mauve), a nod to the creation of color by Simon Garfield, as another ‘rise of the machines’ analysis, but that is in fact what it is.If we have been consistently engaged in the creation of life stories of The Terminator, The Matrix, and Jurassic Park, WestWorld successfully captures these discussions and leaves in the same quandary; what happens when we can no longer decide what life is? There lies the ultimate discussion that takes place from television to politics. The show is timely and beautifully crafted. It does take some time to get into it, but I definitely think it’s worth the investment. You can schedule your purchase on Amazon Prime
P.S. I didn’t realize that the show was based on an earlier film of the same name starring Yul Brynner. If you check out the series let me know what you think about it.
