So yesterday I was in the midst of another rant about failed marketing opportunities from established sneaker brands because Reebok launched a Victoria Beckham x Reebok x Shaq pre-order collab. The pack consisted of tee shirts and sweatshirts. The cost of a tee? $140.00 dollars. At the same time @WeGotGame2 dropped a collab in conjunction with Liz Cambage to celebrate her ridiculous statline from her game against the NY Liberty:
On July 17, 2018, against the New York Liberty, Cambage scored a WNBA record 53 points for the Dallas Wings. Not only did the Wings win 104–87, but she outscored the Liberty’s starting five. To commemorate her outstanding accomplishment @WeGotGame2 is selling 53 limited edition All-Star i c o n . shirts.
I would be remiss if I didn’t state that these are the opportunities that brands have to build the WNBA and connect with fans. If this was an NBA player scoring 81 points in the modern era, there would have been a sneaker dropping and some gear. At a time when brands are continuing to figure out exactly how to attract women to their brand and away from upstart fitness companies Liz’s accomplishment hasn’t been heralded by anyone outside of WNBA circles. There is opportunity here, real opportunity not a Shaq tee shirt for 140 bucks when Reebok is in the midst of launching a new basketball sneaker with classic retro style and when they’ve taken a considerable amount of time to launch a “Be More Human” campaign promoting the strength of women.
Their is a space being left open for entrepreneurial opportunities around the WNBA. The person who figures out the connective bond will really benefit.
Proceeds from the sales will go towards BLACK GIRLS ROCK! in Liz’ name, empowering the next generation of women. In 2006, Beverly Bond founded BLACK GIRLS ROCK! and the annual BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Awards to create a platform for empowering and affirming images of women of color. Bond’s programs encourages girls to excel in STEAM fields, civic engagement, and public service. Which also includes DJing!
