In the turbulent times of 2020, everyone seems to be looking for a way to protest or speak out. Whether it be for equality, representation or justice. While I don’t mean for Women’s World Wednesdays to be political or some self-proclaimed crusade of social justice, I thought it was important to shine a light on women in music. It’s of course easy to talk about the big stars such as Beyonce or Rihanna, but for this series I want to focus on lesser known artists. This Women’s World spotlight shines on Sy Smith. I’ve heard Sy as an extended member of The Foreign Exchange, and most recently on Brandon Meek’s Facebook concerts.

Sy Smith is an incredible singer, musician and artist.  Her music mainly would fall in the Jazz Fusion/R&B category, although her latest release, Sometimes a Rose Will Get a Remix combines her 2018 album Sometimes a Rose Will Grow in Concrete with several genres and inspirations. Her vocal style, lyrics and chord choices are just personal highlights of my listening to her music, not to mention her choices in composition. Some of this could be attributed to her abilities as a piano player and producer, as well as her very diverse musical background. I highly recommend taking a listen to her music, she definitely deserves more listeners than she has.
