Because Memphis has such an extensive roster of locally sourced/owned restaurants, the family crew tends to avoid chains. It’s a personal decision backed by understanding the struggles of small business. It’s also a decision based on flavor profiles. When a company utilizes locally sourced ingredients, the taste is flavorful and distinctly aromatic.

There are a few chain restaurants the crew will visit: Bonefish Grill, Stix, and we can add Firebirds to that list. Odds are we won’t visit any of these restaurants often, but if other options aren’t available, this chain isn’t a bad choice. I do realize this comment isn’t exactly glowing, but that’s okay. Locally owned restaurants often have more challenging menus. The chefs dabble in flavor fusions and the result is almost always perfect. However, when dating, attempting to get someone to try sweetbread or parilla picada, could be a problem.

A restaurant like Firebirds is a step above Applebees and the Cheesecake Factory in ambiance and service. The food is okay. If I had to rate the restaurant on a scale of 1-10, service is a solid 9/10. Atmosphere is slightly better at 9.5/10. The experience feels more upscale without the stuffiness of a classic steakhouse. You’re wondering about the food though… When a restaurant is labeled as a steakhouse, you should order steak. We didn’t do that. We were hanging out on a Saturday afternoon and decided to grab a bite since we were walking around the mall at Carriage Crossing. In order to keep our ticket price low, we thought we would share. Our daughter changed that approach when she ordered the burger.

  • Ranch Rings Panko-breaded onions, roasted garlic ranch dressing – $12.75
  • Cheeseburger* Cheddar / lettuce / tomato / red onion $15.50 + add bacon for $1.95
  • Wood Grilled Shrimp + Classic Salad – $9.25
  • Baby Back Ribs Slow-roasted and grilled, Java BBQ sauce, fresh fruit, choice of side – Full $29.95
  • Tater Tots – $6.50
  • 5 Layer Lemon Cake Fresh blueberries in blueberry sauce – $10.25

It was our first visit, so we went with no adjustments to the order. I tend to like my ribs dry with sauce on the side. The waiter didn’t ask, and the ribs arrived wet. I used the extra sauce, which was standard fare, to dip my tots. We wanted to share the salad, but I left that to wifey. She thought the shrimp had good flavor, but still grabbed some of the ribs and tots. My daughter pulls her burgers, or any sandwiches, apart, but she said she was worried when her cheese wasn’t melted. The burger was fine, but definitely not Belly Acres worthy. When gauging price and flavor, Firebirds was a 6.5 out of 10. You don’t visit a steakhouse and order ribs and salad, but for the price it was fair. We really enjoyed the restaurant and even said we’d go back if our favorite local spots were busy. Check out the pics below.
