Location: Germantown, TN. Houston High School

The Houston Classic is one of the biggest track meets of the year in the Memphis region. Teams travel from hours away to challenge themselves in a competition built around an open and invite format. On Day 1 the only invite/varsity events are Field activities. The “Open” format allows high schools to gauge the athletes who are improving performance. A host of these kids earned PRs and Season’s Best performances with times and jumps that would have earned them an invite to Day 2 if the performances happened earlier in the season.

On Day 2 the big guns of area high school track and field landed. The weather was hot and so were the performances in front of Puma Sponsored legend Asafa Powell, who held a meet and greet with the high school athletes at the Houston Classic prior to the start of the Varsity Qualifier’s Day 2 Events. Day 2 athletes had to have a qualifying time to compete in events on Saturday. This led to a host of amazing performances. The amazing Austin McCall smashed the meet record for the 200m and leads the state of Tennessee in that event.

Below is a playlist of videos. Full coverage is available on Milesplit. I was only able to capture a few events as the place was packed and it was difficult to find angles.
