A few years ago, Outerknown triggered my fashion radar. The sustainably centered brand founded by San Diegan surfer Kelly Slater crafted apparel with a combination of styles easily at home on Mission or Ocean Beach, but balanced enough to sit comfortably in any city around the country, beach or not:

After living in Daygo for years and graduating from San Diego State, the city was never really a hub for fashion. San Diego was about the ride. Lazy cruise to Sunset Cliffs, a stroll to Claire De Lunes, watching the low-riders in National City… San Diego is a blend of rich and white, inaccessible and unattainable life in La Jolla, juxtaposed with Green Cat Liquor and Fam Mart. The city is a beautiful struggle where it’s impossible to leave even when it’s difficult to live a comfortable life. Fashion was there, but it was utilitarian, khakis and tees. This has changed considerably as streetwear and lifestyle brands are on the rise delivering unique apparel made here in the U.S. Imperfects follows the rise of Outerknown with a slightly different aesthetic. Where Outerknown looks more like Pacific Beach, Imperfects captures the workwear style of the South Bay with a touch of Southeast slightly elevated.
