While every other sneaker site is hype about Yeezy and Gap forming a partnership, I’m excited that brands are beginning to look towards providing more sustainable options in their sneaker lines. Filling Pieces, who I recently celebrated on a post about diversity with Anta:

A Chinese Brand Takes the Lead with an Unintentional Challenge: ANTA’S DIVERSE LA DESIGN TEAM

Just created their most responsible shoe ever. Why is this an important discussion? The description of their outsole.

Just created their most responsible shoe ever. Why is this an important discussion? The description of their outsole. It may be difficult to read below, but if here is the short version, they used a BIO-BASED SUGARCANE EVA SOLE. Why did I put this in caps?

When I discuss the importance of Allbirds and the billion dollar valuation, I’ve done so due to their “Sweetfoam” technology. My initial thought was that this tech was trademarked and developed by the brand. The reality is the name “Sweetfoam” is trademarked, but not the tech which means that different companies can utilize the technology to begin creating more sustainable shoes. This isn’t exactly shade as Filling Pieces is a more expensive shoe and understandably so. Here is the rest of the description:

– Organic cow hide upper
– Organic cotton laces
– Recycled nylon logo label
– Recycled PET mesh lining
– Recycled cork insoles
– Bio-based sugarcane EVA sole
– Blue woven Responsibility label and embossed branding.

The campaign doesn’t stop with the production of the shoes, the company has retrofitted their building and also improved the quality of their footwear packaging:

CLOSER TO HOME:

OUR FOOTWEAR AND SHIPMENT PACKAGING IS MADE FROM RECYCLED CARDBOARD. WE ARE ALSO WORKING TOWARDS THE ELIMINATION OF ALL SINGLE-USE PLASTICS FOR OUR READY-TO-WEAR PACKAGING BY THE LATTER PART OF 2020.

OUR BUILDING IN AMSTERDAM’S CANAL DISTRICT HAS BEEN REFITTED TO BE AS ENERGY-EFFICIENT AS POSSIBLE.

WE ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON THE ABILITY TO RECYCLE OUR PAPER WASTE INTO PRODUCTS THAT ARE SOLD BACK TO US.
