In the turbulent times of 2020, everyone seems to be looking for a way to protest or speak out. Whether it be for equality, representation or justice. While I don’t mean for Women’s World Wednesdays to be political or some self-proclaimed crusade of social justice, I thought it was important to shine a light on women in music. It’s of course easy to talk about the big stars such as Beyonce or Rihanna, but for this series I want to focus on lesser known artists.
This Women’s World spotlight shines on Chante Cann.
I discovered Chantae Cann through my Spotify discover weekly playlist. She had a song where she collaborated with the band Snarky Puppy. Out of curiosity I decided to click on her name to see what else she had and after a short amount of time, I already had several songs in my playlist. Most of her songs are heavily R&B and Jazz Her latest album, Sol Empowered, was released in 2017. The three years since its release haven’t changed the quality at all. It still sounds as if it could’ve been recorded yesterday and holds up as such. My personal favorite is iRise, the song in which she collaborated with Snarky Puppy. It’s an energetic, progressive blend of vocals and instrumentation. An incredible project. I highly recommend checking her out.
