Puma cracked the top 10 for more than one reason. They made a bold reentry into the NBA and at the same time delivered a shoe that was like everything else, but wasn’t like everything else. The first drop was bright and way to loud for me. Then a few weeks before I had a chance to see the version chosen for this list @JohnGotty dropped a pic in his Twitter feed rocking this pair that had been gifted by Puma and for the first time I saw the potential for Puma to really do something incredible with this shoe. John Gotty is partially the reason for the Disrupt Purple Glow to make the list, but what I respect about Puma’s boldness in jumping back into the mix was that they did so by paying homage to Clyde Frazier. The legendary Knicks PG and king of style was signed to a lifetime endorsement. While the brand hasn’t done nearly enough to tie the legend to the future (There should be some dope ass spots on YouTube showing scary Terry or Rudy Gay morphing out of Clyde – cut the check Puma) the fact that they’ve released every shoe with rookies who aren’t going to move the needle at retail and they’ve failed to build any storytelling for retailers to use, the brand has undercut the momentum. This colorway though and the fact that they even tried to jump back in is enough to get them a spot outside of the top 5 where 1 brand dominates as expected.
